UGANDA
Nature lovers will enjoy western Uganda’s Kisoro district, which is known as “Little Switzerland” because of the mountainous region, forests and small freshwater lakes. It is home to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – one of four national parks in the world where the critically endangered mountain gorilla can be seen in the wild. You can also spend a day trekking up one of the Virunga Volcanoes in the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Lake Mutanda (pictured), dotted by small islands and surrounded by the volcanoes, makes for a scenic canoeing experience. Then there’s the Murchison Falls National Park, which is the country’s largest such park and home to the Murchison Falls where the Victoria Nile descends into Lake Albert.
